Upper Edge of the Neutron Star Inner Crust: the Drip Point and Around
نویسندگان
چکیده
A semi-microscopic self-consistent quantum approach developed recently to describe the inner crust structure of neutron stars within the Wigner-Seitz method and the explicit inclusion of neutron and proton pairing correlations is used for finding the neutron drip point which separates the outer and inner crusts. The equilibrium configurations of the crust are examined in vicinity of the drip point and in the upper part of the inner crust, for the density region corresponding to average Fermi momenta k F =0.2 ÷ 0.5 fm −1 .

Effective mass of free neutrons in neutron star crust
The inner layers of a neutron star crust, composed of a Coulomb lattice of neutron rich nuclear clusters immersed in a sea of “free” superfluid neutrons, are closely analogous to periodic condensed matter systems such as electronic, photonic or phononic crystals. Applying methods from solid state physics to the neutron star context, we study the transport properties of those “free” neutrons for...

The strong electric field at the surface of a strange star is discussed, and a self-consistent model is proposed to calculate its capability of supporting a “normal” nuclear material crust. We find that the electric field is already not able to support the crust even when the bottom density of the crust is still considerably lower than the neutron drip point, which means that it is not the neutr...
متن کاملEntrainment coefficient and effective mass for conduction neutrons in neutron star crust: Macroscopic treatment
Phenomena such as pulsar frequency glitches are believed to be explicable in terms of a differentially rotating current of “free” superfluid neutrons at densities above the “drip” threshold in the (ionic) solid crust of a neutron star. In a preceding article a microscopic quantum mechanical analysis was used to predict that the relative motion of the neutron current will be characterised by a d...
متن کاملTowards a metallurgy of neutron star crusts.
In the standard picture of the crust of a neutron star, matter there is simple: a body-centered-cubic lattice of nuclei immersed in an essentially uniform electron gas. We show that, at densities above that for neutron drip (∼ 4 × 1 0(11) g cm(-3) or roughly one-thousandth of nuclear matter density), the interstitial neutrons give rise to an attractive interaction between nuclei that renders t...
متن کاملNuclear constraints on the inner edge of neutron star crusts
We show that the widely used parabolic approximation to the Equation of State (EOS) of asymmetric nuclear matter leads systematically to significantly higher core-crust transition densities and pressures. Using an EOS for neutron-rich nuclear matter constrained by the isospin diffusion data from heavy-ion reactions in the same sub-saturation density range as the neutron star crust, the density ...
